Roma Mitchell Secondary College

Transforming learning spaces through innovation and biophilic design.

The talented in-house interior designers and space planners at Keen Office and Education Furniture embarked on an inspiring journey to reimagine the learning spaces at Roma Mitchell Secondary College. We are honored to have our fabrics featured throughout this transformative project.

Working with the existing infrastructure, they drew inspiration from David Thornburg's concepts of Campfire, Cave, and Watering Hole to redesign the layout.

The goal was to optimise functionality and aesthetics, seamlessly integrating biophilic elements throughout the space. The design process began with a deep understanding of Thornburg's educational spaces:

Campfire - a space for storytelling and sharing knowledge.

Cave - a quiet area for individual reflection and focus.

Watering Hole - a place for informal social interactions and collaborative learning.

By incorporating these concepts, they created a dynamic and flexible learning environment that caters to diverse learning styles and activities. The layout was thoughtfully planned to balance open, collaborative areas with private, quiet zones, enhancing the overall learning experience.

Biophilic Library Design

Central to their vision was the creation of a library that serves as a sanctuary of knowledge, seamlessly integrated with the natural world. They were able to showcase a range of Warwick fabrics meticulously crafted to evoke the beauty and tranquillity of nature.

To elevate the design with premium quality and durability, they utilised Warwick fabrics throughout the project. Lustrell Render and Lustrell Charisma, known for their exceptional performance, were key elements in the design scheme. These fabrics were used extensively in seating areas and cushions, providing both comfort and style. Their resilience and easy maintenance ensured that the space remained beautiful and functional over time, perfectly aligning with our vision of a sustainable and enduring learning environment.

The library design incorporates large windows to maximise natural light, indoor plants to enhance air quality, and natural materials to create a warm and welcoming ambiance. This biophilic approach not only improves the aesthetic appeal of the space but also promotes well-being and reduces stress.

Locally Sourced Furniture

Sustainability and community support were at the forefront of the project. Collaborating with local artisans and manufacturers, they sourced high-quality fabrics to ensure durability and comfort. Moreover, all bookcases, tables, and their focal point—the majestic tree—were crafted locally, a testament to their commitment to supporting local craftsmanship and reducing our environmental footprint.

The journey to transform learning spaces was guided by a deep appreciation for the existing infrastructure, a passion for innovative design, and a commitment to sustainability. By integrating biophilic elements, custom renders, and locally sourced furniture, they created a learning environment that is both functional and inspiring. We love seeing our fabrics come together and excited to see the positive impact it will have on the students and educators who use these spaces.
